In French: 'Courriel privé qui devient public'

Excerpt:

<Montée de lait> S'il y a une chose qui me les casse, c'est de voir un courriel que j'envoie à une personne en particulier se retrouver sur une liste de discussion, ou encore de le voir réacheminé à d'autres personnes.... more

Incrementalists & Completionists

I found a post that defines these words via Joel on Software. It was written last year. In short, the author believes that incrementalists are realists, and completionists are dreamers. I know on which side I lean, but the reason I mention this post here is to give focus to a comment from Amit Patel that I find particularly good:

I wrote a game back in high school (1990). At the time, I hadn't gone through the college courses advocating proper design and software engineering practices. I wrote the whole game in a summer. After I took those courses, I tried writing another game. After several years, I gave up. That got me questioning everything.

And Amit to conclude:

Something all of this reminded me of -- when I'm playing SimCity, I get very bored when I plan the whole city in advance and build it all. Doing a little at a time with less planning tends to keep me playing longer. I wonder if it's related.

Hmm... I think it is related.

Off-Shore series, the tools

I just started managing work that the company I work for is contracting to an off-shore firm. I will try to write about this experience, and explain how things are going. It is late tonight so I will be brief, and as introduction, I will simply mention the communicatin tools we are using so far. Remember that this team and I have never met. The challenge is considerable as these people must get familiar with a somewhat complex application with limited documentation. Interaction is crucial to get them going.

So here are the tools we are using:

  • Subversion over HTTP/WebDav
  • Trac Project Management (Ticket system, Wiki, SVN integration with ChangeSets)
  • Mailing list
  • MSN Messenger for chatting.
  • WebEx and GoToOffice for remote desktop access for demo or installation purposes. Not cheap.
  • Traditional phone calls. Not cheap.

We will soon try

  • MSN Messenger's application sharing to possibly replace WebEx or GoToOffice.
  • Skype for phone calls over IP to replace traditional phone calls.

I'll try to talk about many more issues in the days or weeks to come: time zone difference, ethic, risk ("management"?), and more.
