Spreading the news on this religious battle's potential solution: elastic tab stops . When Eclipse, and other editors offer this feature, I believe I may give up using spaces. (notice the use of words such as religious, believe, and battle in this short post, and come back later to see what Google will come up with in the ads section...)

However, now that I think about it, the problem with spaces versus tabs, is their invisibility. Once you load a file correctly indented with either, you can mistakenly mix spaces and tabs as you type and you see no difference. Display errors will only show up when another person opens the same file using different settings or fonts.

But I like the behaviour of these tabs that change their position according to their sibling needs. Neat. Try the sample editor applet.
